Zirconia has become a cornerstone of modern restorative dentistry because it combines high flexural strength with the aesthetics clinicians expect in both posterior and anterior workflows. For dental clinics, the key decision is not whether to use zirconia, but which zirconia approach fits the case: monolithic (full-contour) or layered.
Monolithic full-contour zirconia is milled as a single material, with no porcelain overlay on the functional surfaces. It is often the default posterior choice for molars and premolars because it resists occlusal forces, avoids chipping of veneering porcelain, and allows for efficient, predictable fabrication. Layered zirconia uses a zirconia framework with a ceramic layering build-up, giving the technician more control over incisal translucency, characterization, and shade transition. It is increasingly requested for anterior cases where aesthetics must meet strength.
At our full-service dental laboratory in Shenzhen, China—founded in 2012 and built around CAD/CAM digital dentistry—we fabricate zirconia crowns and bridges for dental clinics in 30+ countries. We work with dentists and clinic teams to select the right zirconia configuration for each indication.
Clinical Advantages for Restorative Teams
Zirconia crowns are valued for a combination of mechanical and biological properties that matter in daily practice.
- Durability under occlusal forces. Zirconia’s strength and fracture resistance make it suitable for posterior restorations, including single crowns and multi-unit bridges. Full-contour zirconia is especially useful where parafunction, heavy occlusal loads, or limited interocclusal space are considerations.
- Biocompatibility and tissue response. Zirconia is metal-free, tissue-friendly, and can be finished with a smooth surface. This supports plaque control and gingival health, and avoids the gray show-through associated with metal-based restorations.
- High-translucency generations. Modern zirconia materials offer improved translucency and shade matching. They can mimic natural enamel and dentin better than earlier opaque zirconia, making zirconia a viable option for visible areas.
- Minimally invasive prep options. Depending on the case, zirconia can support conservative preparation designs. Where indicated, this helps preserve enamel and tooth structure while maintaining restoration strength.
These advantages do not replace clinical judgment. They give dentists and clinics a material platform that can be adapted to the patient’s occlusal needs, aesthetic goals, and preparation design.

Full-Contour Zirconia for Posterior Teeth
Full-contour zirconia is our recommended option for many posterior indications: molars, premolars, and multi-unit posterior bridges. Because the restoration is monolithic, there is no layered porcelain to chip. The material is milled to the approved design, sintered, and inspected for fit and contour. This makes it a practical choice for clinics seeking strength, efficiency, and reliable seating.
Layered Zirconia for Anterior Aesthetics
Layered zirconia pairs a zirconia substructure with a ceramic layering build-up. This option is designed for anterior crowns and bridges where shade blending, incisal translucency, and surface characterization are priorities. The zirconia core provides support, while the layering allows the lab technician to create a more natural optical effect. For clinics treating aesthetic zones, layered zirconia can offer a strong balance between durability and lifelike appearance.
Digital Fabrication and Quality Control
Our zirconia workflow is digital from case intake to final finishing. We use Exocad and 3Shape for design, followed by CAD/CAM production, 5-axis milling, and controlled sintering. Where useful, 3D printing supports model and working cast production within the digital workflow.
Marginal fit is a central quality checkpoint. Each zirconia crown passes through multi-stage inspection covering die fit, margin adaptation, occlusion, contact points, and surface finish. The goal is to deliver restorations that seat predictably and reduce chairside adjustment time. For implant and complex cases, the same digital workflow can be extended to custom abutments, screw-retained designs, and full-arch protocols per the case plan.
Partnering With Our Laboratory
We support dental clinics with case-planning guidance before production begins. Send us your scans, impressions, bite records, shade information, and case photos. Our team reviews the case and confirms the zirconia option—full-contour or layered—along with the proposed design and production schedule.
Turnaround:
- Regular zirconia cases: about 3 days lab time.
- Implant and complex cases: 4+ days lab time.
- Total time including shipping: about 7 days.
Certificates available upon request. Our team can provide documentation when needed for your clinic’s records.
