Dentists and clinic owners comparing international dental laboratories often ask why China dental lab pricing is lower than many domestic alternatives. The answer is not a single number or a secret discount. It comes from labor structure, supply-chain density, production scale, and digital automation. Our laboratory, founded in Shenzhen in 2012, is a full-service CAD/CAM dental lab fabricating custom restorations for clinics in 30+ countries. This guide explains what shapes a quote—material, complexity, workflow, shipping, and remake risk—so you can compare proposals on total value rather than headline price.
We do not publish a fixed price list, because two cases that look similar on a prescription can differ in material grade, implant components, design hours, and turnaround. A useful price guide for dentists is therefore a guide to cost drivers, not a table of invented numbers.
Why China Dental Lab Pricing Is Lower
Labor structure. China has a deep pool of trained dental technicians, with specialized roles in CAD design, ceramic layering, denture setup, implant model work, and quality control. Labor costs are lower than in many Western markets, but skilled technical time is still a real cost. Reputable labs price to pay for that skill, not to bypass it.
Scale and supply chain. Shenzhen and the surrounding region host a dense ecosystem of dental material suppliers, milling centers, equipment providers, and logistics services. A full-service lab can consolidate material purchasing, milling, printing, finishing, and shipping. That reduces overhead per unit compared with a small lab that outsources many steps.
Digital automation. CAD/CAM digital dentistry changes the economics. We use Exocad and 3Shape for design, CAD/CAM production, 5-axis milling, and 3D printing. Digital design reduces repetitive manual work, improves consistency, and allows better nesting and material use. Complex implant and full-arch cases still require substantial hands-on work, so automation lowers cost without removing craftsmanship.
The lower price is sustainable when it comes from process efficiency. It becomes risky when it comes from skipped steps, unclear materials, or no remake policy.
What Drives the Price of a Dental Restoration
Material choice
Material is one of the largest variables. A PFM crown, a full-contour zirconia crown, a layered zirconia crown, and a lithium-disilicate (Emax) crown or veneer use different materials and processing times. Within each category, grade and specification matter. "Zirconia" can mean different blank types, translucency levels, and fabrication approaches. Lithium disilicate is a material technology with specific handling and pressing/milling requirements. Ceramic and composite inlays/onlays, acrylic, flexible, metal framework, and titanium dentures each carry different material and labor profiles. Implant restorations add components, custom abutments, and precision requirements.
Case complexity
A single crown is not priced like a full-arch implant case. Complexity increases design time, model work, verification, and finishing. Implant restorations—single implant crowns, bridges and full-arch—require careful planning, component compatibility, and occlusal control. Removable dentures vary by base material, framework design, and tooth setup. Retainers and night guards are simpler but still require accurate fit and finishing. The more steps and the more individualization, the more the case costs to produce correctly.
Digital vs manual steps
Digital workflows can reduce cost and turnaround, but not every case is fully digital. Scanning, Exocad/3Shape design, CAD/CAM milling, and 3D printing are efficient for many indications. Manual ceramic stacking, staining, glazing, denture tooth arrangement, and implant model finishing remain important for esthetics and fit. A quote should reflect the actual workflow required, not a generic "digital" label.
Shipping and customs
International shipping, packaging, customs documentation, duties, and taxes affect the landed cost. A lower lab invoice may become less attractive if shipping is slow, untracked, or excludes customs charges. Clinics should compare total delivered cost and turnaround. Our regular cases are about 3 days lab time; implant and complex cases are 4+ days. Total including shipping is about 7 days. Rush shipping, remote destinations, and customs delays can change the logistics portion, so confirm what is included.
Rework and remake rates as hidden costs
Rework is the hidden cost that makes a cheap quote expensive. If a restoration does not seat, has occlusal interference, or misses shade, the clinic absorbs chair time, temporary materials, shipping, and scheduling disruption. The laboratory may absorb the remake, but the practice still pays for the visit. A slightly higher quote from a lab with stronger QC, material traceability, and a clear remake policy can be the lower-cost choice over a year of cases. Ask how remakes are handled before you send a case.
How to Compare Dental Lab Quotes Apples-to-Apples
- Material grade and specification. Confirm the exact material, not just the category. For zirconia, ask full-contour or layered. For lithium disilicate, confirm the material technology. For PFM, confirm alloy type. For dentures, confirm base, framework, and teeth.
- What is included. Check whether the quote covers design, scan processing, models, implant components, custom abutments, shade matching, finishing, individual packaging, shipping method, and customs paperwork.
- Turnaround. Separate lab time from total transit. Confirm whether the quote assumes regular or rush service. Our stated turnaround: about 3 days lab time for regular cases, 4+ days for implant/complex, about 7 days total including shipping.
- Remake policy. Ask what triggers a remake, who pays shipping, and how fast a remake is produced. A written policy is better than a verbal promise.
- Communication support. Clear prescription templates, photo and scan requirements, design approval steps, and responsive updates reduce errors. Time-zone coverage matters for implant and full-arch cases.
- Certificates and documentation. Certificates are available upon request. Ask for the documentation you need for your regulatory context.
Warning Signs of Too-Cheap Quotes
A quote that is dramatically lower than others may be cutting something you cannot see until the case is in the chair.
- Recycled or untraceable materials. If the lab cannot specify material source or grade, you cannot verify biocompatibility, strength, or esthetics.
- Skipped QC steps. No model fit check, no occlusal verification, no shade review, or no design approval can lead to fit problems.
- Poor fit and chair-time costs. Adjusting a crown or denture in the operatory consumes clinical time and can disrupt the schedule. Chair time can quickly exceed the cost of the restoration itself.
- No clear remake policy. If remakes are vague or slow, your practice carries the risk.
- Unrealistic turnaround. Promises that ignore shipping, customs, or complex implant steps can delay treatment.
- Weak communication. Missing design approvals or unclear prescriptions create costly mistakes.
How Our Lab Approaches Pricing
Our Shenzhen-based laboratory, founded in 2012, quotes each case from the full prescription so you can see what is included before production: we quote on a detailed prescription: material, restoration type, implant system and components, shade, scan or model requirements, turnaround, and shipping destination. This lets you see exactly what is included before production begins.
As a full-service CAD/CAM dental laboratory, we fabricate PFM crowns and bridges, full-contour and layered zirconia crowns, lithium-disilicate (Emax) crowns and veneers, ceramic and composite inlays/onlays, removable dentures (acrylic, flexible, metal framework, titanium), implant restorations (single crowns, bridges, full-arch), retainers, and night guards. Certificates are available upon request.
To request a case-specific quote, send your prescription and case details to [email protected] or contact us on WhatsApp at +86 18925410015. We will confirm material options, turnaround, and what is included so your clinic can compare quotes on a true apples-to-apples basis.
